Harmony of Spring: A Heritage - Rich Display of Chinese Culture
20 - 21 February 2026
His Majesty's Theatre
Presented by TMI Media Group

A Heritage-Rich Display of Chinese Culture is a live performance that explores Chinese cultural heritage through a contemporary stage presentation.

The production combines acrobatics, Peking Opera, puppetry, dance, music, and magic, all presented within the context of the Lunar New Year.

The performance opens with a Spring Festival Market sequence, accompanied by lion dance and song, setting a festive New Year atmosphere.

This is followed by a series of works that reflect different aspects of Chinese history, art, and intangible cultural heritage.

Key performance highlights include Cranes Dancing over Poyang Lake, a shoulder ballet portraying the movement and form of the white crane; the Peking Opera classic The Drunken Concubine, offering insight into traditional opera aesthetics of the Tang Dynasty; and Spirit of the Terracotta Warriors, a contemporary male solo inspired by the enduring legacy of the Qin Dynasty and its relevance to current cultural exhibitions in Western Australia.

The group dance Blue-and-White Porcelain Rhythms draws from Jingdezhen's blue-and-white porcelain tradition, translating ceramic patterns and forms into restrained movement and stage imagery that reflect centuries of craftsmanship and design.

The program also features a selection of intangible cultural heritage performances, including:

- Song of the Phoenix, performed on the suona, a traditional wind instrument associated with ceremonial and festive occasions;
- Long Silk Dance - Butterfly Lovers, a puppetry work using flowing silk to reinterpret a well-known classical love story;
- Five-Colour Opera Masks, a puppet-based face-changing performance inspired by traditional opera iconography, with small heritage gift bags presented to selected audience members.

In addition to the stage performance, audiences will have the opportunity to meet and take photos with Peking Opera performers prior to the show, offering an informal introduction to this traditional art form.

A Heritage-Rich Display of Chinese Culture presents a structured overview of Chinese performing arts and cultural traditions, providing audiences with a considered and accessible New Year's cultural experience.
